JOAQUIN PHOENIX is officially the fifth actor to step into the rather large clown shoes of THE JOKER on the golden screen.
With a budget of $55 million, quite modest for a superhero film, the stand alone origin story will be "more experimental in tone and content", according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Spurred on by a blog by The Hollywood Reporter, there has been backlash regarding the casting of Phoenix, who came to prominence in 2000 with his award-nominated performance in Gladiator, with some fans feeling that the Joker's character has been exhausted due to numerous characterisations over the last decade. Many suggesting that the movie need not even be made. This opinion most likely exasperated by the luke warm reception of Jared Leto's interpretation of The Joker in 2016's Suicide Squad.
The movie will be directed by Hangover director Todd Phillips, who also co-wrote the screenplay.
The film begins production later in the year, with no release date yet announced.
